Amaranth harvest

Only one plant grew, but it did great! I cut the flowers off when the birds started being all over it (and we had a dry-ish day), dried them for a week inside, threshed, and winnowed. All told I got about 2/3 of a cup (around 120 g) from one single plant. It's a great permaculture plant - I did nothing to care for it, it will seed itself around my yard, you can eat the leaves (I haven't done a lot with them as we had plenty of greens but they are supposed to be delicious), and best of all they are chock full of protein and other goodies.

It's very drought-tolerant, too!

Lessons learned:

  • If you don't have a windy day for winnowing, you can use your own breath

  • If winnowing isn't working, you need to thresh more

  • Stake the plants, they are top-heavy

  • If you're excited to grow something, don't be scared. The worst that happens is it doesn't grow and you're out a few dollars for seeds.
