We've had some family crises and I've been coping by working on the garden. I've completely wood-chipped the front yard, gotten 3 trees planted (fuyu persimmon, Ashmead's Kernel apple, and native Pacific crabapple), and dug out hundreds of irises and a LOT of lemon balm from the border (I put 4 big bunches to dry and composted the rest; we have many other areas of lemon balm on the property). I replanted the border with Oregon and Portland native butterfly plants and transplanted strawberry runners, and mulched it all with straw I got from a neighbor. I have started the lengthy process of replacing dandelions that are popping through the woodchip with native yarrow; there's a ton of yarrow along the street and I hope it will fill in as groundcover. It has a taproot like dandelions so I'm hoping by replacing the dandelions I'll get the same benefits with better flowers. Bees will get food from dandelions in an otherwise-barren pollinator desert (aka lawn) but dandelions are like junk food, they don't have all the nutrition that the bees need.
