I just got through the soil section of the course and I just want to take a minute and talk about how much I love nettle. Especially because I already make my own jauche! This plant stings for a reason...because it knows it's valuable. It probably evolved to sting because it's so nutritious and otherwise animals would eat it until extinction. I know it's not technically native and can be aggressive, but I don't really care. It is such a valuable plant.
When we moved to our land, I was so excited to see how much of it was already there. It's a dynamic accumulator and helps restores soil, so I knew our soil would be good. I knew about the fertility affects, but I had no idea about just how good it is for humans too. Now, I try and consume nettle in some form almost every day because of it's energizing, restorative, anti-allergy affects. Plus it's a super good source of iron which is essential for women's health. I actually now feel sluggish if I don't get my cup of nettle tea in the morning.
I also now don't mind the sting, and think I've gotten (somewhat) used to it. At the end of the day when my hands are stinging and vibrating, it's a sign of a day well spent. It is the singular plant that makes me feel more connected to the earth. Sure there are others, but this plant just really makes you feel alive. It's almost like a cold plunge. When you get stung, you can't really think about anything else. It forces you to become more present and mindful. You begin to move around spaces more carefully. And now I find that if i brush up against nettle slowly, I almost never get stung. Whereas I'm rushing, I get REALLY stung.
Metaphorically I think this is really important and nettle has been such a teacher for me. It tells me where the soil is good, what soil needs to be improved, to slow down, and to heal myself. It's my favorite plant...maybe ever!
