Fixing acidic soil for my vegetable garden

I sent my soil samples to a lab, because I couldn't figure out the soil composition accurately. The results say that my soil is mostly acidic between 5.5 to 6.0. They recommended to add lime to fix it. I don't know if adding lime is the solution.

Does compost help? Should I test the compost before adding it to the soil?

Can anyone recommend something else? I heard that ash has the same effect as lime.

Your feedback is appreciated.
