Garden Sit Spot

Monday 8/19 8:20pm

It’s a chilly evening with a light wind blowing north to south. Besides the rustling of leaves the garden seems still this evening. My eyes almost immediately land on a cucumber beetle resting on the underside of a kale leaf. The garden was overrun by these critters in past years. This year I avoided planting cucumbers in hopes to lesson their pressure. This has helped tremendously! A shadow crosses over the garden and I look up to see two doves circle the field then head into the line of pine trees. I imagine they are searching for tasty bugs and seeds in the field. They return to their nest in the pine tree line with tasty morsels. I pause and listen for a moment. I can hear the usual bug chirps in the field and several crickets singing their song from within the garden. A dog is howling from the distance, and I hear the neighbor riding his lawnmower across the yard. Out of the corner of my eye I see three doves come flying out of the pine trees and land in my driveway. I watch as the pick around for a few moments before flying off again. Finishing my session I begin to head out of the garden. I notice small mushrooms sprouting from a log I use as a garden bed border. The mushrooms are too small for me to identify, but I’ll keep checking back on them. Maybe someone else can tell?
