Gophers, voles: help!!

Dear community, please help me avoid having to bring in an exterminator. Gophers or voles or some underground critters are eating the roots (and my dog is going in and creating bigger holes in search of them.) Any advice at all of solutions that really work to end this problem? We know the critters just need food but it’s wrecking havoc on everything. We’ve tried shoving cayenne and poop and garlic and coffee grounds down their holes. It seems to just move them to another part of the yard. Desperate for help and wishing to avoid harmful methods. Thank you!!
