We are working on designing our front yard in sort of an alley-cropping style. I've maxed out the trees that can fit in the design and still leave sunlight for veggies but there's a LOT of space for bushes or other perennial crops. I don't want to plant 17 berry bushes, that's more than we can handle, but I'm having trouble brainstorming what else I can put in that's at that scale, much less narrowing down to what will work for us. I can't put any brambles in as it's high traffic, so I'm planning to put in maybe 5-7 assorted berry bushes including some natives, currants, and maybe more blueberries (we already have 2 blueberry bushes).
A lot of it is full sun, along the edges of yard areas (both streetside and along paths/sidewalk). I'm not attached to having woody bushes; artichokes or other similarly large perennial crops are certainly on the table, as are native bushes, nitrogen fixers, etc. but I can't handle more annuals at this time. I am in Portland, Oregon, zone 9a, tons of rain in winter but dry summers.
