Does anybody have any recommendations for permaculture and/or gardening resources for a cold, wet, windy climate with very acidic nutrient poor soil? My design project is for a piece of land on an island of the north west coast of Scotland.
As I delve into the details of my project, I am finding that most permaculture/gardening/farming resources out there tend to be targeted at a drier climate with already rich soils. I can find a great deal about how to retain water on the land, or how to grow green manures which depend on an already rich soil, but this and much else that I find about permaculture projects isn't relevant to my situation.
Obviously the course modules have given me a blueprint for dealing with any and all the conditions of my design site, and one of the previous course graduates also here in north of Scotland did her design on a very similar piece of land. There's also a youtube channel run by a guy up in Sutherland who is doing very inspiring permaculture work. So I'll certainly be able to design something appropriate for the site.
But I just wanted to put in out there in case anyone knows of any resources that could be useful. I am always wanting to learn more about the creative ways people have managed to live with the land in challenging circumstances.
For example, there are old lazybeds here on the island from before the Clearances and I recently learned how to make lazybeds from a crofter on South Uist, but there is so little info around on traditional practices like these.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
