I was nervous of creating spam by posting these independently but I still want to share little summaries for each day.
Day 3: Today I focused on the variety mixed wildflower seeds. I originally planted these after amending the dead soil and just wanted to see what would happen before making any real plans. I noticed they only wanted to grow in the full sun. The area closest to the cement wall does not get any sun throughout the year and thus, i will have to consider shade loving plants to fill this area. Somehow a Malope Trifida is taking residence in this shaded area next to my partially shaded Malva Neglecta that was intentionally planted there. Anyway, the Trifida is giving us beautiful pink flowers and i am here for it. I read the flowers are edible so i'm excited to expand my salad.
I was also looking for more caterpillars spotted from the previous days "sit spot" exercise from day 2, but they were difficult to spot this time around. I suspect its due to a different time of day. I ended up trying to binge a little bit on moth/butterfly caterpillars.
Day 4: Today I spent the first ten minutes staring at the hawk moth that i thought was enjoying my lettuce bin, waiting for it to do something before realizing it was dead.
I don't know how it got there nor what would happen to my salad greens if i left it there, so i decided to relocate it to the flower garden where i place all of the buggies that i removed from my food bins.
If I left it there to decay above ground, could bacteria spread to my edible greens?
Should i have buried it?
Won't the ants just enjoy a treat?
I have questions.
Day 5: I learned that most of the flowers in my flower bed that the caterpillars seem to love so much were called Calendula, and are edible/medicinal. I em so excited to explore all it's uses when the next buds bloom as i wanted to let the caterpillars have their way with them, with the intention of increasing pollinator diversity for my area. We will see how they fair in the full heat and sun of the summer. I hope I can give them everything they need. I also hope to expand my side yard into a native wildflower garden. I don't see any bees around these flowers though. I did see a wasp once here but im unsure why these would attract caterpillars, butterflies, ants, and some small beetle like insects, and not bees? hmm.
